Derby were the loveable buffoons of the Premier League season
 |
| Chris Flanagan |
THE 2007/08 Premier League season will be remembered for many things. Manchester United's last-day title win, Mourinho's exit, the arrival of Fernando Torres, the return of Kevin Keegan. And not least, but definitely last, Derby County.
Amid the Grand Slam Sundays and the cut-throat competition between the oligarchs and the billionaires, Derby have given us all some light relief. A throwback to when football was fun.
Derby's plight was forgotten about when it became clear they were certain to be relegated, some time in August.
But marvel at these statistics. Played 38. Won 1. Drawn 8. Lost 29. That's 29 - a figure so ludicrously high it would be spelt out in capital letters as 29 (TWENTY NINE) on the Grandstand videprinter so you could be sure it wasn't a misprint.
There's more. Goals for 20. Goals against 89. Points 11.
By the end of September, seven teams already had enough points to finish above Derby if they lost every game for the rest of the season.
Luckily for Manchester City - the side who started like Linford Christie but finished like Mark Lewis-Francis with two dodgy hamstrings - they were one of those seven.
Derby were the loveable buffoons of the Premier League season, spreading joy where there was misery and tension.
If your side was doing badly, one look at the table cheered you up.
Everything's all right, we're still 23 points above Derby.
Had a bad day? Lost a game you should have won?
Worry not. Put the radio on. Derby have lost 6-0 at home to Aston Villa.
If your team was struggling for form, all you needed was a home match against Derby to sweep away all your troubles.
Then there were the interviews.
After Derby's board wisely decided that they could not possibly get any worse if they disposed of Billy Davies - the man who so miraculously got them promoted in the first place - Paul Jewell arrived to inform us that the Rams were in fact doing much, much worse.
Every week, Jewell would tell us in as many words, Look, I admit it, we're rubbish and we know we are. I'd get rid of all of the players if I could but the tea lady says she doesn't fancy marking Didier Drogba. Why won't you all just let me suffer in peace?'
There was a day not so long ago when Jewell was regarded as one of the best managers in the country. A man who quit Wigan when he did not have to leave.
Now he is manager of Derby. A man who has delivered five points in 24 matches. Reputation ruined.
And a side that can lose 4-0 at home to Reading on the last day of the season is a side to be admired.
They did not want to go out with a whimper, they wanted everyone to remember just how bad they were.
The Premier League will miss Derby. Some might suggest they should be granted an indefinite stay in the top flight. Don't worry lads, you're exempt from relegation.
But somehow I suspect that's the last thing Derby want right now.
* There has rarely been a more inappropriate renaming of a ground than St Helens' decision to refer to their Knowsley Road home as the GPW Recruitment Stadium.
The GPW Recruitment bit is fine - I'm long past tutting when a sponsor takes over the name of a ground. It's the idea of labelling ramshackle Knowsley Road as a stadium' that I object to.

Wow sensational and original journalism!
Sure Derby haven't had a good season, sure things have been done wrong, but what a completely unoriginal and pointless peice of writing.
The only buffoon here is you.

I agree with the above poster. You also mention that looking at Derby's results makes fans feel better. Well, as a Derby supporter, making me feel better is knowing that as bad as things are, they could be worse. At least I'm not from Crewe.

Yer couldn’t agree more with the other posters. This article is definitely written by someone who knows nothing about Derby and very little about football in general. Do you think it is coincidence that the record low points tally has been broken 3 out of the last 6 seasons? No its because the premiership is getting much harder. This Derby team may have gone down fighting 10 years ago but not only the best but also the average teams like villa, everton, portsmouth and Blackburn are getting so much better that you have to spend massive amounts of money to compete.
I am a Derby fan and although some of our performances have been shameful, I would not swap out points tally for other teams attendances (12th highest and would have been more if our capacity would allow). You can change your team but you cant change your fans.. one thing is for sure we will be back stronger than before, teams like wigan however will always have no fans.. and you my friend.. will always be ginger!

Come on now Chris; you asked for all of these retorts.
I, too, would rather be following a team with a regular attendance in excess of 30000, a fantastic stadium and training centre, than following the Alex. And with all these plus points, we [bold]will[/bold] be back stronger.

What an uninformed ridiculous story. I take offence in particular to the suggestion that Pride Park is an inappropriate name for a ground where 30,000+ proud Rams fans have supported more loyally than many (if any) other club in the premier league could ever contemplate. We, the fans, showed the pride we have for a club with a massive history, great ground, great training facilities, have not gone into administration (yes we actually pay our debts) and have built a team that made the Premier League and will come back stronger! Do some research young man if you want to report on a club you obviously know nothing about.

What pathetic, lazy journalism from (i'm assuming) the work experience kid. i'm not even a Derby fan (Hull City!) but this kind of piece is completely pointless. You don't even tell us anything new or relevent. You just try and stick the knife in while using some unamusing poor sports cliches and end up looking like a fool.
Terrible stuff. Try writing about something important or interesting.

What a pointless article.
The biggest load of crap I've ever read.
You make it sound so personal too..
You in general have no clue what football fans think like.
'If your side was doing badly, one look at the table cheered you up.
Everything's all right, we're still 23 points above Derby.'
You ask every football fan you come accross and I assure you not one will agree they have thought that this season.
Idiot, stick to comics.

Such insightful journalism is a joy to read. Next thing you'll be telling us Man Utd won the league - exclusively
It's time to givez up the day job son and go and look for some more appropriate employment. I hear they're looking for someone to muck out the stables in Nantwich.
Ill-informed, disrespectful and designed for a cheap laugh. If that's what the future looks like for your articles, send your cv to the Sport.
Can I also suggest you never set foot near Pride Park and stick to the mighty Gresty Road? No! Change that, do set foot near Pride Park, us loveable buffoons could do with a good laugh.

Are you the Sherminator out of American Pie? Big mistake putting your photo up. Article is ill-informed rubbish, usually when journalists write about Derby they slag off and laugh at the team and then mention how the support of the fans is unparalelled in sport. The team with the lowest wage budget and who spent the least finishes bottom, wonderful idea for an article.

Completely insensitive journalism. Young Chris clearly has no idea what being a football fan is all about, no matter who you support! Derby fans are a proud bunch and have done themselves credit during a dire season, calling them bufoons is just nasty and quite frankly, I am sure Chris' editor will be apologising for his behaviour

Such an unoriginal piece of writing. Nice to see you've missed out the fact that we've pretty much sold out at Pride Park every other week. Our 2,000 odd support was clapped off by the West Ham fans at Upton Park last month. The other week we took near to 5,000 up to Blackburn and generated an amazing atmosphere. Supporters from the big clubs have come to our ground and been outsung.
And tell me, wheres the footballing talent in Cheshire exactly?
Put your thesaurus away kiddo and find another hobby.

And mate, you bring shame to the name journalism. Thought pieces are fine. But when you a). State the obvious and b). Offer no counter-arguments to any point you make, you automatically look like a poor journalist.
That mate, is what you are.
What a waste of wages

Of course, our esteemed Mr Flannagan does make one good point. Sometimes an ugly car wreck can make for compelling viewing. This sorry excuse for a think-piece surpasses even DCFC's attempts at so bad it's funny entertainment.

Chris lad, if I was as bad at my job as you appear to be at yours I would have been slung on the dole years ago.
I wont go deeper into what is wrong with the piece as most of the faults have been highlighted by others already.
Suffice it to say that I wouldn't even give your piece room in a school newspaper as it is totally devoid of the exclusivity the banner promises and lacks anything resembling balanced reporting.
I think the editor might also be looking for a new job soon...... or at least taking a much closer look at the "quality" of your work.
End of term report? Must do better Chris.

Guys, this was clearly a light-hearted article aimed at a Warrington audience rather than a Derby one. I'm fully aware of the reasons behind your struggle and I make the point at the end that I understand it cannot have been enjoyable for the club itself. But you must appreciate that to the rest of the country recent results have appeared remarkable. I'm sure things will be better next season.

Chris.
How was it "clearly" designed for a Warrington audience?
Do people in Warrington not understand basic football point systems? Or do they not appreciate blatant facts?
Don't insult our (and the people of Warrington's) intelligence by claiming "it wasn't designed for us".
Normally "light-hearted" also references humour, which was lacking.

That effort at justification and apology is as poor as the article itself.
If you want to do an inciteful and news worthy piece, why don't you put you mind to the reasons clubs like ours are climbing into the Premier league and then failing so miserably, instead of scratching the surface and having a cheap shot at clubs like ours.
You may then find a wider audience than Warrington, showing approval.

As somebody who isn't a Derby fan, I still found this article insulting; not for the fact that it is poorly written, lacks any humour, shows no insight into their plight or any other of the obvious flaws, but the fact Derby County are one of the founding members of the football league and deserve more respect than the jibes of somebody who obviously knows nothing about football. Mr Flanagan is only young but if he is the future of journalism then God help us. This trashy article was of no merit to anybody.

1, Another sport feature? "Chelsea or Man United will be European Champions."
2, Maybe some hard hitting journalism? "The government takes money off us by making us pay something called 'tax'."
3, A local interest story? "Cheshire is a dull and souless place to live".

Where in this article do you make the point that "you understand it cannot have been enjoyable". All I see is a smug, sarcastic remark where you say "Don't worry lads, you're exempt from relegation".

But you must appreciate that to the rest of the country recent results have appeared remarkable. I'm sure things will be better next season.
Hang on.
Where in this article do you make the point that "you understand it cannot have been enjoyable". All I see is a smug, sarcastic remark where you say "Don't worry lads, you're exempt from relegation".

oh dear chris, what a hornet's nest you've disturbed. As you may have guessed from the response you've had, us Derby folk are still a immensely proud bunch, despite our teams efforts. Your resposte tries to argue this is clearly for a warrington crowd but surely if you have electricity and such amenities in warrington people are more than aware of Derby County and our season so you're doing nothing more than trying to snigger (not so) behind our backs. Im not going to lower myself to petty insults but i don't think slapping a big picture of yourself next to the piece was such a smart move either youth. must try harder

See, all these comments will be the topic of the next management meeting and Mr F will be held up as the new face of journalism.
The newspaper will now think they're plugged into the internet and can save their jobs!
Oh woe is me.

such a poor excuse for journalism, yes we've had a poor season but with our facilities, financial backing and most of all loyal support week in week out we're in a much better position than some clubs who have been relegated from the premiership i.e our good friends Leicester. Ever been to a football game Chris? thought not.
