Leak to affect 19,000 homes

A LEAK on Winwick Road today could affect 19,000 homes across Warrington this weekend.

Experts from United Utilities say the 24" water main has been damaged and repair work will begin tomorrow, Saturday, morning.

The areas affected are Rixton, Blackbrook, Padgate, Orford, Cinnamon Brow, Woolston, Fearnhead, Bruche, Paddington, Birchwood, Hollins Green, Oakwood, Locking Stumps, Howley and the Manchester Road area.

United Utilities' Christian Ewen said: "We would like to reassure customers that we have identified the leak and are doing everything we can to ensure we carry out repairs as quickly and with as minimal disruption as possible.

"A contingency plan has been put in place before work begins should it become necessary to provide alternative water supplies to our customers.

"We have tankers on standby and bowsers which can be deployed to relevant areas."

is this the same main that has leaked before? If so, why has it gone again?
If not, why are the mains around the Winwick Rd area always in trouble?
Getting fed up with water cut offs!!

United Utilities are the most incompetent utilities company I have ever had the mispleasure of dealing with.

When I moved to Runcorn I had to give them my details on 4 separate occasions over a period of several months before they set my account up properly to be able to take a DD from me, of course they still spelt my surname wrong meaning the DD instruction failed and I soon received a very politely worded letter from solicitors demanding payment.

It comes as no surprise to me that repairs previously undertaken by UU are in need of further repair, the repair done previously was probably a patch rather than replacing any length of pipe in order to 'cut costs' - it's all more examples of why utilities like water/gas should not be provided by private (driven by the need to make profit for shareholders) enterprise.

The last time this happened we were without a propoer supply for several days, and NO COMPENSATION. I pay my bill in full - why don't I receive a full service? UU profits jumped last year - to £560 M - because they were allowed to raise their water charges significantly to invest in their infrastructure.

I think somebody's taking the mickey here - they can't complain about the infrastructure they inherited AND post record profits AND leave 19,000 customers without water - yet again.

We're paying UK prices, not Russian prices. A British quality of service would be appreciated, United Utilities.
