VOTE 2008: Tory joy as Labour slump
 |
| Tory leader Keith Bland celebrates with new councillors Paul Campbell, left, and Paul Kennedy |
THE Lib Dems may have retained control of Warrington Borough Council but last night's election was all about the Tories.
The Conservatives won two seats - one from Labour in Penketh and one from the Lib Dems in Hatton, Stretton and Walton.
The victories put paid to Lib Dem plans to oust the Tories from the controlling alliance they had formed since removing Labour from power two years ago.
The Lib Dems also gained two seats, this time at the expense of Labour councillors in Whittle Hall and Bewsey & Whitecross.
It capped a disappointing night for Labour who only won one seat - from incumbent Independent councillor Ann Haddow, who was standing down in Fairfield & Howley.
Labour's group leader, Terry O'Neill - who held his own Burtonwood & Winwick seat - left Woolston Leisure Centre soon after the final result was in.
His colleague, Paul Kenny, said: "We always knew it was going to be a difficult set of elections for us and naturally we're disappointed to lose two seats.
"But we're pleased that six of our councillors retained their seats."

Tory leader Keith Bland said he was over the moon' with the results and said he was hopeful' about continuing to share power with the Lib Dems.
The shock result of the night was Lib Dem executive member, Peter Walker losing his Hatton, Stretton and Walton seat to the Conservative Paul Kennedy.
Council leader Ian Marks described the loss as disappointing' as a win would have seen his party gain overall control of the council.
The BNP stood in Warrington for the first time but it's two candidates polled only 434 votes out of more 40,000.
The election means that the Lib Dems now have 28 seats, Labour 22 and the Conservatives 7.

the BNP didnt poll 434 votes out of 40000 votes because they only stood in 2 wards with a combined vote of 4180.so across both wards they polled 10.4%,in bewsey they polled 8% and in howley & fairfield polled 12.9%.put into that context the BNP vote was impressive for a first time and bodes well for the future when every ward will be contested.

Have the BNP managed to find a member who can count and do percentages? Impressive!
If andyf is that intelligent, why is he supporting the BNP?

I live in one of the areas targetted by the BNP. Couple of days before the election, someone scratched a swastika onto the fence of a house owned by an asian family near us.
What a coincidence. First time I've seen anything like this in around here. Is this what the rest of Warrington has to look forward to?

Right, yeah, I'm so opposed to a racist party that I'd commit a racist act. On a quiet street where only a couple of passers by will see it? I would deliberately intimidate my [italic]neighbours[/italic]?
There's plenty of evidence linking BNP activity in an area with an increase in racist attacks. In Burnley, when 8 BNP councillors were elected between 2002 and 2003 there was an increase of 149%. There's similar figures for Barking and West Yorkshire.
I can believe that andyf is a law-abiding citizen, I've known a few BNP members in other areas, some were upstanding citizens, and some definitely weren’t. But activity by a party that blames all our problems on immigrants and "lefties" just makes things worse, as it encourages some pretty unpleasant people to crawl out of the woodwork. And I don’t want to see my neighbours hurt by that. If that makes me a raving leftie than I guess I’m a raving leftie.

Jeff your right to a point every political party has its undesirables a member of the labour party was arrested for child **** last week but you wouldnt condemn the whole off the labour party because of one individual.where the BNP have councillors racist attacks actually decrease,in barking and dagenham racist attacks have decreased since the BNP where elected check the met police website.
the BNP dont blame all our problems on immigrants,we blame the politicians totally.you cant blame immigrants for wanting a better life but this country is full its not about race its about space.
i mean nothing is black and white these labels off 'left' or 'right'are used by the media to tag people as one thing or another.if the BNP was in favour of immigration you would say they were to the left of labour but because there against further immigration there called far right.so it seems that your either left or right depending on were you stand on immigration, which is simplistic and just shows how the media have corrupted politics in this country.

Well you called me a leftie in a previous post, hence the comment.
You’ll have to forgive me, but I’m suspicious of a party that prohibits mixed-race relationships in it’s constitution. That seems like an odd thing to get het up about.
Plus I remember the BNP targeting Warrington just after the IRA bombs in 1993, trying to stir up anti-Irish feeling.
